Fond du Lac, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team had the hot hand from the opening tip to the final buzzer and used it on the way to a 74-54 win at Marian University Tuesday night in the season opener.
The Buccaneers shot 52.6% (30-57) for the game, including 53.3% (16-30) in the opening half while also hitting 8-17 three-pointers and winning the rebound battle by a wide margin, 45-30.
Beloit scored 15 of the first 23 points for a seven-point lead four minutes into the game. Marian responded with a 16-9 run over an eight-minute stretch to tie it at 26 with 6:13 left in the half before the Bucs put together a 10-3 run to regain their advantage. They led 36-31 at the break.
A 16-8 Beloit run in the first eight minutes out of the lockerroom gave the Bucs a 52-39 lead. The Sabres had an 8-0 run to pull back within five midway thru the half and it was still a seven-point game at 58-51 with 7:57 left. But the Bucs closed the game on a 16-3 run, gradually building their advantage, with the final score their largest lead of the night.
Cody Risseeuw led the way in his first game with the Bucs, scoring a game-high 23 points and grabbing 12 rebounds. Mike Gulve added 16 points and Carlton Henning 14. Andrew Bremner tied his career high with 14 rebounds while dishing out five assists to go with his nine points.
Beloit returns to Flood Arena on Saturday for its home opener, hosting Milwaukee School of Engineering at 1:00 p.m.
