Beloit, WI – Though it may not feel like it with the recent weather, Winter is just around the corner. And with it comes Basketball season.
The Beloit College Women’s and Men’s Basketball teams tip off their 2016-17 seasons on Tuesday night, both on the road. There’s new faces on both teams, and likely some surprises, as the season stretches out to its finish in late February/early March.
The Women’s squad gets things going first with a game at Aurora University at 5:15 p.m. Tuesday. Gloria Bradley begins her first season as head coach of the Buccaneers, a team missing several pieces from 2015-16, most notably all-time leading scorer Lana Wieseman.
Three starters return for Beloit in guards Laura Panicali (15.9 ppg) and Shelby Kline (8.4 ppg) and forward Nora Polaski (8.0 ppg, 6.4 rpg).
The Women open their home season on Saturday, November 19, when they host Concordia University Wisconsin at 3:00 p.m. in Flood Arena.
The Men get their season underway on Tuesday night at Marian University in Fond du Lac at 7:00 p.m. Brian Vraney begins his tenth season in the head coach’s chair for the Bucs, also missing key players from 2015-16 in forward Steve McAfee, Jr., the third-leading scorer in Beloit history, and point guard Rudy Bentley, Jr., who ranks third in career assists.
Like the Women, the Men return three starters in guards Andrew Bremner (11.1 ppg, 6.2 rpg) and Mike Gulve (8.3 ppg, 35 3-pointers) and forward Jacob Manthe (4.6 ppg, 4.1 rpg).
The Men also play their first home game on Saturday, November 19, when they host Milwaukee School of Engineering at 1:00 p.m. in Flood.
