Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team used an aggressive approach in the first half to build a lead and then held off a comeback attempt by Illinois College for an 86-71 win in Flood Arena Wednesday night.
Beloit surged away from a 6-6 tie early in the opening half with a 20-6 run that built a 26-12 advantage. After the Blueboys pulled back with nine a 14-2 run gave the Buccaneers a 44-23 lead with just over two minutes left in the half. IC closed the half with five unanswered points in the final minute-plus to pull back within 47-33 at the break.
The Bucs kept a comfortable double-figure lead thru the first 12 minutes of the second half before Illinois College went on a 12-3 run to pull within 73-66 with 3:16 remaining. But that was as close as the Blueboys would get, with Beloit closing on a 7-0 run for the win.
The Bucs built their first-half cushion with 65.5% (19-29) shooting and finished at 58.8% (30-51) for the game. IC shot 42.6% (26-61) for the game, 39.4% (13-33) in the second half. Beloit out-rebounded the Blueboys 35-27.
Steve McAfee finished with 30 points, eight rebounds and five assists to take over the #3 spot on the Beloit career scoring list while recording his 11th career 30-point game. Rudy Bentley had 21 points, a career-high nine rebounds and six assists while Andrew Bremner scored 14 with seven rebounds. Mike Gulve had 10 points.
The Buccaneers begin a three-game road trip on Saturday when they travel to 14th-ranked St. Norbert College. Tip off is at 2:00 p.m.
