Late Lead Slips Away, Buccaneers Fall in Double OT

Lake Forest, IL -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team saw a late lead in regulation slip away with missed free throws; got a buzzer beater at the end of the first overtime to force another extra period; and fell just short in the second overtime in an 86-84 loss at Lake Forest College Wednesday night.

The Bucs out-scored the Foresters 9-6 in the last four minutes of the first half to take a 29-26 lead into the lockerroom.  Beloit built a 60-51 lead in the second half with a 12-2 run but LFC forced overtime with an 11-2 run in the last 1:57, boosted by six missed free throws by the Buccaneers, to force overtime.  LFC got two free throws with one second left to tie it at 62-all.

The Foresters were up four with 13 seconds left in the first OT before Rudy Bentley made a layup and Carlton Henning hit a jumper from the left baseline at the buzzer to force another extra session tied at 72 apiece. 

LFC jumped up 80-72 midway through the second overtime only to see the Buccaneers close within 84-82 with 18 seconds remaining.  But a pair of free throws pushed the lead back to four with five seconds left to seal the win.  Bentley made a layup at the buzzer for the final score.

Lake Forest shot 62.5% (5-8) in the overtimes and made 14-18 free throws while Beloit shot 47.1% (8-17) and were 5-9 from the charity stripe.  For the game the Bucs hit on just 16-30 free throws while the Foresters made 21-27.

Steve McAfee finished with 36 points on 10-20 shooting with four three-pointers and 12-14 free throws.  Bentley added 20 points with three three-pointers and eight assists while Henning had a career-high 12 points.  Andrew Bremner added six assists and four steals.

The Buccaneers return to Flood Arena on Saturday afternoon when they host Grinnell College in a 1:00 p.m. Midwest Conference game.
