Buccaneer Basketball Heads to Florida for Winter Break

Beloit, WI – The Beloit College Men’s and Women’s Basketball team will continue their seasons after the Holiday Break with a long road trip – playing two games each at the RDV Sportsplex Classic in Orlando, Florida.

The Buccaneer Women will face Mount Ida College of Newton, Massachusetts, on Monday, December 28 at 5:30 p.m. ET and nationally-ranked Hope College of Holland, Michigan, at the same time on Wednesday, December 30.  The Buccaneer Men will take on Messiah College of Mechanicsburg, Pennsylvania, on the 28th at 7:30 p.m. ET and Hope at the same time on the 30th.

Mount Ida College comes into their meeting with the Beloit Women 1-8 overall, having lost four straight after a 79-63 loss at Wheelock College on December 12.  First-year head coach Katie Greene’s Mustangs are led by Angelique Martinez, who averages 14.3 points and 13.8 rebounds per game.  Katlyn Jesse averages 13.7 points and 5.0 rebounds and Brittany Crosby averages 7.9 rebounds.

Hope College is 9-0 coming into the Classic and ranked sixth in the Top 25.  They have won 11 of their last 12 going back to last season, when their season ended in the NCAA Division III Sectional Semifinals.  The Flying Dutch, under 20th-season head coach Brian Morehouse, have a balanced attack led by Maura McAfee with 16.6 points and 10.6 rebounds per game and Victoria Swift at 9.9 ppg.  Overall, five players average at least 7.8 ppg.

The Buccaneer Women, under fifth-year head coach Jennifer McCormick, are 4-5 overall after their 91-68 win over Monmouth College in Flood Arena on December 19.  Lana Wieseman, the second-leading scorer in Beloit Women’s history, leads the team with 23.3 points and 6.9 rebounds per contest.  Laura Panicali averages 17.2 ppg and Shelby Kline 11.9.  Nora Polaski leads the team with 7.2 rebounds per game.

Messiah College comes into the game with the Beloit Men 3-7 overall, dropping five straight games after a 61-58 loss at Eastern Mennonite University on December 19.  13th-year head coach Rick Van Pelt’s Falcons are led by Micah Brown with 13.3 ppg and Geoff Boyle at 13.0.  Boyle leads the team in rebounding at 7.1 per game while both Josh Clippinger and Jonah Meredith average 5.8.  Luke Cable averages 4.1 assists per contest.

Hope is 8-1 heading into the Classic with a five-game winning, the last two in their own Russ Devette/Hanover Sentinel Classic on December 21 and 22.  Under second-year head coach Greg Mitchell, the Flying Dutch are led by Ben Gardner at 14.6 ppg with 5.5 rebounds and 3.8 assists.  Harrison Blackledge is at 14.1 ppg, Sam Otto 13.0 and Brock Benson 11.9 with a team-leading 7.0 rebounds.  

The Buccaneer Men, under eighth-season head coach Brian Vraney, are 3-6 overall and have dropped four of five games after an 84-80 loss to Monmouth College on December 19 at home.  Steve McAfee, the seventh-leading scorer in Beloit Men’s history, leads the team with 23.7 points and 9.4 rebounds per game.  Rudy Bentley averages 16.1 ppg and 5.3 assists while Mike Gulve averages 11.9 ppg.  Andrew Bremner is at 10.7 points and 5.7 rebounds per contest.

Once back up North, the Bucs return to Midwest Conference play on January 6 when they host Lake Forest College in Flood Arena.  The Men tip at 5:30 p.m. followed by the Women.
