Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team pushed 23rd-ranked UW-Whitewater as hard as they could for 45 minutes but came up just short in a 73-71 overtime loss in Flood Arena Saturday afternoon.
The Buccaneers led by as many as nine in the first half, holding the lead for all but 36 seconds of the 20 minutes. Steve McAfee had 10 points, Mike Gulve nine, Rudy Bentley eight and Andrew Bremner seven on the way to a 38-31 advantage at the break.
An 8-0 run out of the lockerroom gave the Warhawks their first lead since the 18:21 mark of the first half but the Bucs responded with a 15-6 run over the next seven minutes to take an eight-point lead at 11:45. Beloit was still up by seven with 3:57 left in regulation but UWW closed with a 7-0 run, tying the score with 15 seconds left on a pair of free throws to force the extra period.
In overtime Whitewater broke away from a 69-69 tie with 1:26 remaining, scoring four of the final six points to secure the win.
Gulve led four Bucs in double figures with a career-high 18 points, his third career high in three games, including hitting four three-pointers for the second straight game. McAfee and Bentley each had 16 while Jacob Manthe had 10 points and a career-high 14 rebounds. Bremner added nine points and seven rebounds.
Beloit gets back to Midwest Conference play on Tuesday night at Ripon College. Tip is at 5:30 p.m.
