Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team erased a double-digit deficit in the final six minutes but couldn't come all the way back in a 76-72 Midwest Conference loss to Lawrence University on Wednesday night in Flood Arena.
Early in the first half the Buccaneers overcame a 12-4 deficit with a 15-4 run but the Vikings responded with a 29-13 run to close out the last 10 minutes for a 42-32 lead at the break.
LU pushed its advantage as high as 15 early in the second half and still led 67-55 with 6:32 left. But Beloit put together an 11-2 run to pull back within 67-64 with 2:24 remaining. The Buccaneers got as close as two twice in the final seconds but Lawrence hit seven free throws down the stretch to keep the Bucs at bay.
Beloit shot 50% (11-22) in the second half but finished at 45.8% (22-48) for the game while the Vikings were hot from the start, shooting 54.9% (28-51) for the game, including 59.3% (16-27) in the opening half. The Bucs hit 22-27 free throws.
Steve McAfee scored 21 points and grabbed 11 rebounds to lead Beloit. Mike Gulve had a career-high 17 points, hitting four three-pointers, and Rudy Bentley had 15 points and four assists and Tanner Smith 10 points.
The Buccaneers step away from MWC play on Saturday when they host 23rd-ranked UW-Whitewater at Flood. Action begins at 1:00 p.m.
