Bucs Can't Come Back After Big Turnaround

November 18, 2015

Fond du Lac, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team had things going their way in the first half but couldn't come back after a Marian University run in an 80-72 loss Wednesday night.

The Buccaneers used a five-minute 17-2 run to take a 21-6 lead at the 12:11 mark of the opening half.  But the Sabres responded with a 16-0 run in less than four minutes to grab a one-point lead with 8:49 left.  It was all even at 35 at the half.

Marian came out of the lockerroom on a 14-0 run that completed a 29-point turnaround and gave them a 49-35 lead with just over 14 minutes left.  The Bucs trailed 68-53 with 6:28 remaining before putting together an 18-7 run to pull back within 75-71 with 47 seconds left.  But that was as close as they'd get as MU made five free throws down the stretch while the Buccaneers went cold.

Steve McAfee had a game-high 27 points and also grabbed 12 rebounds to lead the way.  Rudy Bentley scored 15 with three assists and Mike Gulve added 11 with three three-pointers.  The Buccaneers shot 40.7% (22-54) from the field for the game while the Sabres were at 51.7% (31-60).

Beloit is off thru the weekend before opening Midwest Conference play Tuesday night when they host Carroll University.  Tipoff is at 5:30 p.m. in Flood Arena.
