Ripon, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team had been through this end-of-game scenario too many times this season, most times ending in heartbreak. But this time the Bucs made the baskets and got the defensive stops when they needed them, topping Ripon College 64-59 in Ripon on Wednesday night in the season finale.
The first half was close until the Red Hawks turned a one-point lead with 4:16 left into a nine-point spread at the 2:24 mark with an 8-0 run. RC led 36-28 at the break.
Ripon built their lead up to double-figures in the first four minutes of the second half at 43-32 and still led 48-38 with 13:30 left. That's when the Buccaneers got themselves back in the ballgame, going on a nine-minute, 17-6 run to take a 55-54 lead with 4:13 remaining. The teams exchanged the lead for three minutes until Beloit spurted away from a 59-58 deficit with the final six points and an upset victory over the MWC Tournament-bound Red Hawks.
The Bucs shot 53.2% (25-47) for the game, including 57.1% (12-21) in the second half when they made their run while holding RC to 43.6% (24-55) for the game, 33.3% (9-27) in the second half. Beloit also won the rebounding battle 33-21.
Steve McAfee led the Buccaneers with 27 points, 16 in the second half, on 11-12 shooting, finishing his junior season with 1,080 career points, 15th on the Beloit Men all-time list. Andrew Bremner had 13 points, 11 in the opening half, while Sean Fancsali added eight points and seven rebounds in his final game with Beloit.
Also playing their final game for the Bucs were Laramie Wieseman, who had two assists; Seth Sanderson, who had three points; Alex Hade, who had a team-high eight rebounds; and BJ Kiser, who had two rebounds and three assists.
