Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team knew they had a sizable challenge in front of them, hosting ninth-ranked St. Norbert College at Flood Arena on Saturday.
It was just that as the Green Knights took charge in the second half while topping the Buccaneers 74-53.
With the win St. Norbert clinched their fifth Midwest Conference Championship in the last six seasons.
SNC pulled away from a one-point lead in the opening half with a 10-2 run to grab a 23-13 lead with 7:05 left. The Bucs responded with a 12-6 run that pulled them back to within 29-25 with under three minutes remaining but the Green Knights scored the last seven points of the half to lead 36-25 at the break.
St. Norbert held their 11-point lead thru the first eight-plus minutes of the second half. The Bucs were still within 46-35 at the 13:20 mark before the Green Knights went on a game-deciding 22-8 run over the next eight minutes to take a 68-43 advantage with just under five minutes left. The Buccaneers never got closer than the final score the rest of the way.
Beloit shot 50% (11-22) in the second half but finished at 42.2% (19-45) for the game. SNC dominated the rebounding with a 34-18 advantage.
Steve McAfee, who scored his 1,000th career point on Wednesday, led the way with 22 points, the only Buccaneer in double figures. Rudy Bentley's eight points was the next highest point total.
Beloit looks to close strong with three games remaining, beginning with Tuesday night vs. Lawrence University in Flood Arena. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
