Buccaneers Fall Victim to Late First-Half Run

January 24, 2015

Grinnell, IA -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team was holding on just fine until a late first half run led to an eventual 128-110 loss at Grinnell College on Saturday afternoon.

The teams stayed within striking distance of each other through the first 12 minutes of the opening half, with four ties in that time-span.  But the Pioneers hit nine three-pointers in the final 6:13 of the half to close with a 30-16 run and a 71-59 advantage at halftime.

A 19-12 run by the Buccaneers out of the break brought them back to within 83-76 with 15 minutes left.  But Grinnell took off on a 22-9 run over the next six minutes to build a 20-point lead at the 9:54 mark and never looked back.  The Bucs never got closer than 13 points in the final nine minutes as GC eased in for the win.

Beloit shot 68.8% in the opening half and 67.2% for the game (45-67) but had two three-pointers to Grinnell's 32.  They also made 18-27 free throws while GC shot just 17.  The Pioneers shot 48.3% (42-87) for the game and were 32-67 from three-point.

Steve McAfee led the Buccaneers with 36 points while Alex Hade had a career-high 22.  Andrew Bremner scored a career-best 14 and Rudy Bentley had 12 points with a career-high 11 assists, tied for the fourth-most in a game in Beloit history.  BJ Kiser added 10 points.

The Bucs look to gain some momentum for the stretch run when they host Carroll University on Tuesday night at Flood Arena.  Game time is 7:30 p.m.
