Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Men's Basketball team ground out a win over Illinois College in Flood Arena on Saturday, building a good lead in the first half before having to hold off the Blueboys down the stretch 75-67.
Beloit took over 10 minutes of the first half to get things going before busting away from a 15-15 tie at the 9:16 mark with a 22-8 run to close the half for a 37-23 lead at the break.
Their advantage reached a high of 16 points early in the second half and held in double figures for the first 12 minutes before IC started chipping away. A 14-4 run by the Blueboys made it a 56-52 game with 5:39 remaining. The Buccaneers got it back to a nine-point lead with just over three minutes left but, again, Illinois College just wouldn't go away and cut it back to four points with under a minute left.
Beloit hit their free throws in that final minute, with Rudy Bentley going 6-6 out of their 8-8 effort as they held on.
The Buccaneers shot 48.3% (14-29) in the first half before slumping to 38.7% (12-31) in the second while IC was hitting at a 48.1% (13-27) clip at the same time.
Sean Fancsali had a monster game with a career-high 27 points, 17 in the second half. Steve McAfee had a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds despite an off shooting night. Alex Hade also had 11 with four assists while Bentley finished with nine.
The Bucs hope momentum is now on their side as they have a few days to prepare for Lake Forest College, who visit Flood Arena on Wednesday night. Action begins at 7:30 p.m.
