Football Falls in Season Opener

September 2, 2018

The Beloit College football team fell to Concordia University-Chicago 36-10 on the road to open the 2018 season.

Facing a 7-0 deficit less than two minutes into the game, the Buccaneer offense took over and marched their way down the field. Joey Werner carried the ball nine times as the Bucs capped a 12-play 58-yard drive with a 24-yard field goal off the boot of Andy Berlin to cut the lead to 7-3.

Beloit continued to drive the ball with five more extended-play drives but were unable to capitalize before heading into the lockerroom trailing 27-3.

A few missed opportunities widened the gap in the second half. The Bucs opened the second half with an 11-play drive that stalled at the Concordia 18-yard line with a missed field goal. Werner carried the ball five times on the drive but the highlight was a 19-yard connection from quarterback Erick Mitchell to Juan Reyes.

In the next drive, Werner found a seam and burst through the line for an 11-yard gain on his first carry. Mitchell found Reyes once again, this time for 15 yards down to the CUC 19-yard line. A rush for no gain followed by two incomplete passes brought out the field goal unit. The attempt was unsuccessful.

On second and ten on the Bucs next offensive opportunity, Mitchell connected with Ethan Conley for a 14-yard gain and a first down. Werner gave Beloit another first down on a nine-yard gain followed by a two-yard spurt near midfield. Mitchell got another receiver involved finding Abraham Quijas for 15-yards and another Buccaneer first down. Facing third and long, The Bucs notched their longest play of the game as Mitchell combined with Kentreyal Carraway for a 32-yard gain. The drive stalled and a field goal attempt sailed wide.

The Bucs were efficient on their next drive marching the ball 80 yards on 12 plays for a touchdown. Werner opened the drive with a seven-yard gain followed by fellow-back Tyree Smith’s six-yard carry. Mitchell found Tyler Korous on back-to-back snaps for 16 and 17 yards respectively. Mitchell continued to showcase his precision on the drive with an 18-yard strike to Conley taking the Bucs to the Cougar 11. Smith got the call for a five-yard gain. On third and five, the Bucs went to their workhorse, Werner, who took them down to the one and then punched it in on fourth down to make it 30-10.

Werner carried the ball 32 times for 129 yards. Smith added 40 yards on 12 rush attempts. Mitchell went 18-31 for 206 yards spreading the ball around as seven Bucs recorded receptions in the contest. Conley and Reyes each had four catches for 50 and 40 yards respectively to lead Beloit’s receiving corp.

Defensively, Andrei Prikhodko and Silas Say led the Bucs with nine tackles each. Prikhodko added one tackle for a loss of four yards.

The Buccaneers return to Strong Stadium for their home opener Saturday, September 8. The Bucs will host Knox College for a 1 p.m. kickoff. The game will feature a number of pre-game and in game events as Beloit partners with the Boys and Girls Club for pregame entertainment and halftime activities. The athletic department will also be holding a vintage clothing sale prior to the game.
