Miller’s Buzzer-Beater Lifts Bucs over Monmouth

December 1, 2018

Senior Matthew Miller found the bottom of the net as time expired to give the Beloit College men’s basketball a thrilling 63-62 win over Monmouth College Saturday afternoon in Flood Arena.

It may not have been the prettiest win but it was a win nonetheless as the Bucs stayed within striking distance to give themselves a chance late in the game.

Monmouth held the lead for the majority of the first 20 minutes of play but the gap never surpassed eight points as the teams went into intermission with the Scots holding a 34-31 advantage.

The second half was just as tight with the Scots leading by as much as nine, 52-43, past the halfway mark of the period. The Buccaneers put together a 9-3 run over the next three minutes to pull to within three, 55-52, with 5:30 remaining in the game.

Three consecutive free throws for the Scots put their lead at six, 58-52 with 4:29 on the clock. Darin Empereur found Andrew Walters open beyond the arc for a three-pointer to cut the margin to three. Miller was fouled on the next offensive possession and hit one of two from the charity stripe to make it 58-56 with 3:36 to go.

The teams traded layups and Walters hauled in the defensive rebound on the opposite end. He pushed the pace finding Mylan Walters open from long range for a three ball that gave Beloit a 61-60 lead with just 2:06 remaining.

The next minute ticked away with neither team finding a bucket until Monmouth’s Will Carius elevated to hit a jumper over good defense to sway the score into the Scots’ favor 62-61 with less than a minute to go.

Carius came up big on the defensive end jumping a Miller entry pass for the steal but Walters had the defensive response with a huge block on the other end with just 10 seconds left.

Trailing by one, Walters pushed the pace getting into the offensive zone. The ball found Miller’s hands on the right side of the lane. He darted into the paint with a power move sweeping the ball up and over the defense with his left hand. The ball drifted up, hit the rim and fell through as the final buzzer sounded and Buccaneer fans and teammates rushed the court in celebration.

Beloit won the turnover battle forcing the Scots to commit 20 while the Bucs committed just seven in the game.

Shoup led all players with 26 points bolstered by a perfect 7-for-7 from the charity stripe. Mylan Walters was 4-for-6 from beyond the arc for 12 points. Miller and Andrew Walters combined for 18 points, 11 rebounds and five assists while Empereur dished out a game-high five assists.

Beloit improved to 4-3 and 2-0 in the Midwest Conference with the win. The Scots fall to 2-5 and are 0-2 in league play.

The Bucs head north to Ripon for more MWC action Wednesday. Tipoff is scheduled for 7:30.
