Jose Gutierrez shaved nearly half of a second off of his school record pace set a week ago to advance to the finals in the 400-meter hurdles at the 2018 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Outdoor Track and Field Championships hosted by UW-La Crosse Thursday afternoon.
Gutierrez registered the third-fastest time in the event, 52.31, but qualifies fourth as the winners of the three heats take the top three qualification spots for the finals.
The junior is one of nine to advance to the finals which will be run Saturday at 2:15. The top eight finishers in the event will earn All-America honors. The lone Buccaneer to earn All-America honors currently in men's track and field history is Djuvane Browne who was a back-to-back All-American (2003, 2004) in the high jump.
Gutierrez is joined by Eva Laun-Smith representing Beloit College at the championships. Laun-Smith will compete in the triple jump slated to begin at 11 a.m. Saturday.
