The Beloit College baseball team was swept by Lawrence University in a pair of games in Appleton Saturday. The Buccaneers will host Lawrence Sunday at 1 p.m. at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium for a chance to make the Midwest Conference Tournament.
The MWC Tournament will consist of the top two teams from the north and south divisions. St. Norbert College has already wrapped up the top seed in the north division with the second team to be determined by games Sunday. Beloit, Ripon and Lawrence all share a 6-8 record. The Red Hawks face St. Norbert in De Pere Sunday while the Bucs host the Vikings.
The Bucs scored in the first four innings of game one Saturday to jump out to a 5-1 lead. The Vikings bounced back with two runs in each of the fifth and sixth innings before the bats went cold. Beloit threatened with two runners on in both the eighth and ninth but left two on each inning.
In the bottom of the ninth, the Vikings put together three consecutive singles for the walkoff win.
The Bucs outhit the Vikings in the nightcap but again were unable to push runners across. Lawrence opened the scoring with a single run in the bottom of the second that Beloit answered in the top of the next inning. Then Beloit took the lead in the top of the sixth but the Vikings responded to tie the game 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh.
A big eighth inning for Lawrence saw three runs touch home for the final.
Beloit stranded 14 runners in the second game of the twinbill, 25 were left on for the Bucs in the doubleheader.
The Bucs host the Vikings Sunday for a pair of games beginning at 1 p.m. The seniors will be recognized in between games as Beloit plays for a chance to advance to the MWC Tournament.
