The Beloit College men’s and women’s track and field teams competed in the Pointer Final Qualifier hosted by UW-Stevens Point Saturday afternoon.
The meet was the final opportunity for the Bucs to qualify for the National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III Indoor Championships set for March 9-10 in Birmingham, Alabama.
First-year Eva Laun-Smith competed in the 60-meter hurdles, long jump and triple jump. She posted a time of 9.07 to finish third in the 60-meter hurdles Saturday. Her season-best and school record time of 8.95 set in a preliminary heat of the event at the Midwest Conference Championships is currently ranked 23rd in the nation and is tied for the fastest time recorded by a first-year student-athlete so far this season.
Laun-Smith posted a leap of 5.38 meters (17-8.00) to place fourth in the long jump in Stevens Point. The MWC champion in the event registered a mark of 5.57 meters (18-3.25) at the league championships which is tied for 22nd in Division III this season. Teammate Aleeshah Heinzen also competed in the event, finishing eighth with a leap of 5.31 meters (17-5.25).
Laun-Smith and Heinzen represented Beloit College in the triple jump finishing eighth and tenth with jumps of 11.22 meters (36-9.75) and 10.62 meters (34-10.25) respectively.
Sophomore Frances Knaggs crossed the line in the mile in 5:54.55, her best time this season, to finish 16th.
First-year Fernando Castillo also posted his best performance in the 200 meters this season registering a time of 22.82 to finish ninth.
Additional Buc marks from Saturday’s last chance qualifier include: Heinzen’s 8.22 in the 60-meter dash, Castillo’s 7.29 in the 60-meter dash, Jason Dormon’s 24.28 in the 200 meters and 56.23 in the 400 meters, and Dan Arkes’ time of 4:30.39 in the mile.
The NCAA Division III Indoor Qualifying announcement is slated for release Monday morning.
