The Beloit baseball team has been picked to finish second in the Midwest Conference North Division by the league's coaches.
The Bucs went 19-19-1 last season posting an 11-5-1 conference mark en route to the league championship game.
Beloit's 2018 squad features a balance of experience and new talent. Outfielder/pitcher Jalen Davis (Chicago, Ill.) earned ABCA/Rawlings All-Central Region Second Team, D3baseball.com Third Team All-Central Region and First Team All-MWC returns for his junior campaign. He led the Buccaneers with a .399 batting average, an on-base percentage of .476, 44 runs, 65 hits and 17 doubles. Davis also left a mark on the Beloit record book with the second-most at-bats (163), runs, hits and doubles and the third-most total bases (87) in a season in program history. His .387 career batting average is first all-time.
Senior catcher Jeremy Dutton (Plainfield, Ill.) also returns after receiving All-MWC honors last season. Dutton posted the second-most runs (31) and third-most hits (46) and doubles (15) for the Bucs in 2017. Fellow senior Mark Christine (Huntington Beach, Calif.) started all 39 games, most at shortstop, en route to 2017 All-MWC honors.
Other returning starting position players include junior pitcher/outfielder Brice Call (Northbrook, Ill.) and sophomore third baseman Terrance Cribbs (Willowbrook, Ill.).
The Bucs return 12 pitchers to the bull pen this season including seniors Colton Lopez (Chicago, Ill.), Steven O'Neil (Centennial, Colo.), David Hlawek (Springfield, Ill.) and Jamie Huntley (Woodstock, Ill.); juniors David Harrison (El Paso, Texas), Mike Weeden (Brown Deer, Wis.), Josh Nelson (Cudahy, Wis.), Luke Brennan (Naperville, Ill.) and Robbie Bulin (Nekoosa, Wis.); and sophomores Danny Belling (Plainfield, Ill.), Tyler Assiff (Reno, Nev.) and Justin Kopech (Buffalo Grove, Ill.).
Beloit opens the 2018 season against Knox College in Galesburg, Ill. March 4. The Buccaneers will compete in the RussMatt Invitational in Auburndale/Winter Haven, Fla. March 10-17. The Bucs' home opener is slated for March 25 against Milwaukee School of Engineering.
