Comeback Held Off, Bucs Edged By Rams 68-75

January 17, 2018

Beloit, Wis. – Trailing in the second half, the Bucs’ defensive effort keyed a comeback that came a little too late Wednesday night at Flood Arena, as they were held off at the end by the Rams of Cornell College 68-75.

Tristan Shoup’s (’20 Fort Atkinson. Wis.) layup with 10:06 left in the first half broke an 8-minute scoreless streak for the Bucs in a game where offense was at a premium for both teams to start. Both offenses subsequently recovered to combine for 40 points in the final 10 minutes of the half, with Shoup contributing 13 of his 20 total points to lead the Bucs heading into the locker room.

After falling behind by as much as 24 (31-55) in the second half, Coach Vraney implemented an aggressive press that paid off for the Bucs in a big way. The adjustment helped force 13 turnovers in the second half, which sparked a run for the Bucs.  First-year Andrew Walters ('21 Denver, Colo.) hit two free-throws with 1:55 remaining to cut the Rams' lead to single digits (55-64) before #13 Nathaniel Shead ('21 Plano, Ill.) hit a 3 to trim the lead to 7 (60-67). Unfortunately, the Bucs simply ran out of time in their effort to finish off the comeback.

Walters and Shead both chipped in 10 points apiece, with all 10 coming at the line without a miss for Walters.

The Bucs (2-14, 1-8) will travel to Appleton, Wisconsin to take on the Vikings of Lawrence University Friday, January 20th. Tip-off is at 2:00pm.
