Career Day From Shoup Not Enough in Bucs’ 98-106 Loss to Pioneers

January 13, 2018

Grinnell, IA. – Despite a career high in points (40) from #5 Tristan Shoup (’20 Fort Atkinson, Wis.), the Bucs came up short against the Pioneers of Grinnell College Saturday afternoon, as they fell by a score of 98-106.

Shoup started fast, scoring the first 9 points for the Bucs and hitting his first 11 shots from the field. For the game, the sophomore shot a ridiculous 79% (19-24) from the field as he constantly broke free from the aggressive press the Pioneers employed. In addition, his 11 rebounds contributed to a decisive rebounding advantage (41-33) for the Bucs.

Despite the impressive performance, the Bucs trailed by 5 heading into halftime, in part due to the 31 turnovers the Pioneers forced in the game. The Pioneers stretched their lead to as high as 16 (60-76) before a furious rally by the Bucs. First-year Mike Kayira (’21 Houston, TX.) hit a 3-pointer with 8:11 left to play to cut the deficit to 2 (80-82), but they weren’t able to regain the lead as the game came to an end.

Senior Cody Risseeuw (’18 Clinton, Wis.) and Mason Jones (’20 Santa Maria, CA.) also scored in double digits for the Bucs, finishing with 10 and 14 points, respectively.

The Bucs (2-13, 1-7) return to Beloit to take on Cornell College Wednesday, January 17th. Tip-off is at 5:30pm.
