Roscoe, IL -- The Beloit College softball team moved a few miles down the road to Swanson Park for their Friday night games, splitting the doubleheader under the lights with Grinnell College, taking the first game 7-6, and dropping the second 8-2.
The Pioneers jumped on top early in game one, putting up four runs off three hits in the top of the second, receiving help from a few Beloit defensive miscues. Grinnell added another run in the third, and their sixth of the game in the fifth before Beloit made a pitching change in the top of the 6th. Alyssa Boltik took the mound in relief for Beloit starter Mikayla Martin, who had allowed five hits in her five innings of work. Martin remained in the game at first base, and put up the Bucs' first runs of the game in the bottom of the sixth when she blasted the ball over the fence in left center, scoring herself and Maddie Terlap, who had led off the inning with a pinch-hit single.
Beloit's offence went to work in the bottom of the seventh, trailing by four to start the inning. Alex Kohn led off the inning with a single to left, and was pushed to second when Erica Stalo was awarded first base after being hit by a pitch. Tala Cornell moved the runners with her single to left, and Jordyn Ciochon scored Kohn with a base hit to right. After a pitching change for the Pioneers, Martin received her third RBI of the game, scoring Stalo on a grounder to third. With one out, Tatiyana Rodriguez loaded the bases again as she reached base on an error in right field. Ashley Lambert followed Rodriguez with an RBI single, putting the Bucs within one run of the Pioneers. With two outs, junior Taurie Burns scored Beloit's final runs with a single to left center, earning the Bucs the win in walk-off fashion.
Cornell finished the game with three hits.
Beloit's bats cooled off in game two, right as Grinnell's seemed to heat up. The Pioneers put up a quick run in the first inning, but the Bucs matched it with one of their own. With loaded bases, Terlap singled to center, scoring Bethany Stavrakas before Grinnell defense shut down Beloit's offensive chances for more runs. Grinnell took control of the game offensively, putting up four runs in the top of the third, and three more in the fourth. Before Beloit could answer back, the game was called due to a city mandated time curfew.
Pitching duties were shared between Boltik and Martin. The pair gave up eight runs off eight hits. Boltik suffered the loss.
Terlap was 2-for-3 with an RBI in the game.
The Bucs close out their season on Sunday afternoon, with a doubleheader at Strong Stadium against Cornell College. The first pitch is scheduled for 12:00 pm. Beloit will be honoring their 2016 seniors in between games.
