The Buccaneer Mascot
Since 1949, Beloit College's athletic teams have been known as the Buccaneers. Previously teams had been known as the Blue Devils and then the Gold. A campus vote in 1949 officially changed the name to Buccaneers, with other suggestions being Bobcats, Braves and Bulldogs. After the Buccaneers was selected, it was noted that Beloit College was the first college in the nation to use that nickname. The current logo was adapted shortly after Tampa Bay joined the NFL in 1976. Due to copyright issues, the Beloit Buccaneer is the reverse of Tampa Bay's and has a different plume.
