Schmiechen was named the Director of Athletics & Recreation in late September of 2014 after serving for eight years as the Associate Director of Athletics. Also the the Head Coach of the Beloit Men’s Soccer team since 1990, he stepped down from the position in December of 2016 so he is able to devote his full energy to his position as the leader of Buccaneer Athletics.
Schmiechen was not only the winningest coach in the Beloit program’s history but is also the winningest coach in Midwest Conference Men’s Soccer history, both for overall victories (217) and Conference victories (137). The Bucs earned a spot in the Midwest Conference Men’s Soccer Tournament in 15 of his 26 seasons, including a stretch of nine appearances in 10 seasons from 1995-2004. In 2006, the Buccaneers captured their first Midwest Conference Championship since the 1974 season, and their first outright title since 1972, with Schmiechen earning MWC Coach of the Year honors for the fifth time. He has coached 14 All-Region players during his tenure with the Buccaneers and helped produce 44 First-Team All-MWC players.
He graduated from Ohio Wesleyan in 1985 with a degree in physical education. After graduation, he earned his master’s degree in exercise science from the University of Massachusetts. While at Massachusetts, he was the assistant men’s coach for the NCAA Division I soccer program.
