The Beloit College men’s and women’s cross country teams opened the season with solid runs at the Beloit College Early Bird that took place at the Kieselburg Forest Preserve in Roscoe, Illinois Friday evening. The race featured Beloit College, Edgewood College and Rockford University.
The Buccaneer men finished atop the three-team standings. Senior Dan Arkes (20:56.2) and sophomore Yusuke Hatano (22:46.0) crossed the line in first and second. Philippe Mortelliti took seventh with a time of 23:28.7 followed by Mauricio Penn in ninth with a time of 23:44.0.
Noah Sisson, John Tower Jr., Alex Villegas, Jacob Cunningham, Isaiah Wisdom, Nicodemus Enciso, Nathan Marklin and Aaron Holzmueller rounded out the runners for the Beloit men.
Junior Frances Knaggs crossed the line first for the women to lead the Buccaneers to a second-place finish. Knaggs posted a time of 22:13.5. Sophomore Brenda Martinez-Flores (23:04.1) and senior Jamie Manchen (23:05.6) finished in fifth and sixth respectively.
Fiona Cismesia, Sophia Miliotis, Emma Newsham, Margaret Baugh, Maria Jones and Kieran Rodning rounded out the Beloit women competing in the Early Bird.
The runners will be back in competition September 15 at the Augsburg University Invite in Bloomington, Minn.
