The Beloit College baseball team topped Rockford University 17-8 in a slugfest at Pohlman Field, the home of the Beloit Snappers, Wednesday night.
Nineteen Buccaneers saw action in the three-hour contest including six hurlers that took the mound while the offense plated runs in all but two innings.
Beloit’s offense got going right off the bat, pun intended. Nick Schmidt drew a one-out walk in the bottom of the first. Schmidt advanced to second on a failed pickoff attempt and crossed the plate on a Jalen Davis double to left center. Jeremy Dutton followed with a single to left field and Ethan Conley’s groundball to the pitcher allowed Davis to score.
The Bucs doubled up with two outs in the bottom of the second. Mark Christine doubled to right center with two outs. Brice Call notched a RBI single to right field, stole second and scored on a single to right field off Schmidt’s bat to make it 4-0 in favor of Beloit.
The Regents continued to chip away at the Buccaneers’ lead and pulled to within one, 5-4, heading into the bottom of the fifth. The Bucs responded with their biggest offensive output of the game. Conley led off the inning with a walk followed by a Bronson Balholm single through the right side that put runners on the corners. A wild pitch plated the first run. Terrance Cribbs drew a walk and Drew Freitag singled on a bunt to load the bases. Christine came up with a huge two-run single to left center. The speedy Bucs on base put the pressure on the Rockford defense with both runners going on the pitch. An error on the throw on the double steal brought in one run. Schmidt plated one more with a one-out single up the middle. The final run of the inning for Beloit was scored on a Dutton sacrifice fly to right field. The six-run fifth for Beloit extended the advantage to 11-4.
The Bucs added five insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh and a single run in the bottom of the eighth.
Dutton and Balholm each went 3-for-5 from the plate for the Bucs combining for two runs batted in and three runs scored. Schmidt, Davis, Conley and Christine all registered two hits in the game with Conley and Christine notching three RBI each.
Mike Weeden got the start for the Bucs allowing one run while striking out one in two innings of work. Jamie Huntley took the mound for the next two innings allowing two runs. Josh Nelson, Steven O’Neil, Connor McCloskey, Keith Haina and Christine all got an inning of action on the mound.
Up Next: The Bucs are scheduled to host St. Norbert College Saturday at 1 p.m. before heading to De Pere for a doubleheader Sunday. However, with a poor weather forecast slated for the week, there is a possibility the Bucs and Green Knights would play at a neutral location Friday. Stay tuned for the latest schedule changes and updates.
