Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team came out on the wrong end of a non-conference doubleheader with the University of Chicago at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium Saturday, falling 21-8 and 13-10.
In game one the Bucs fell behind 6-0 before getting on the board in the third inning when Austin Martinez's run scoring single plated Kam Sallee. They added two in the fourth on Mike Gulv e's two-run home run to right center. But the Maroons plated five in the fifth to move up 11-3. Jalen Davis' two-run single in the bottom of the fifth made it 11-5 but UC scored four in the sixth and six in the seventh to make it a 21-5 game. Beloit closed the game with three in the bottom of the seventh on a run-scoring single by pinch-hitter Joe McKay and a two-run single by Caleb Bierman before the game was stopped early.
David, Brice Call, Mark Stephens and Mark Christine all finished with two hits in the game.
In game two the Maroons jumped up 6-0 again before the Buccaneers broke through with two in the third on Gulve's sacrifice fly and Jeremy Dutton's run-scoring single. Chicago answered with three in the fourth and two in the fifth to make it 11-2. Beloit got two back in the fifth on a sacrifice fly by Martinez and a Brice Call single and added another run in the sixth on Davis' RBI single.
The Buccaneers then plated four runs in the seventh to pull within 11-9. Ethan Conley had an infield RBI single, Christine a sacrifice fly, Conley scored on an error and Sallee doubled in a run. UC scored twice in the ninth to make it 13-9 before the Bucs could get just one more across in the bottom of the inning on Sallee's RBI single, closing out the game.
Sallee and Conley both had three hits while Davis and Call had two each.
Beloit has little time to regroup, hosting Knox College in a rescheduled non-conference doubleheader on Monday afternoon at The Ballpark. First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
