Bucs Salvage Split with Second-Game Offensive Burst

March 26, 2017

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team earned a split of their non-conference doubleheader with Wisconsin Lutheran College in the 2017 home opener Sunday, winning the second game 16-6 after falling in the opener 6-5.

In game two the Buccaneers pushed across seven runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to win by the 10-run rule.

After the Warriors had taken the lead with  an unearned run in the first Beloit scored three times in the bottom of the inning, with Brice Call's two-run single the big blow.  They added three more runs in the third, all crossing on Jalen Davis' bases-clearing double.  Wisconsin Lutheran scored twice in the fourth to pull within 6-3 but the Bucs got those two runs back in the bottom of the inning on Jeremy Dutton's RBI double and Austin Martinez's sacrifice fly to left.

WLC again pulled close with three runs in the fifth, making it 8-6, but that was all the runs they'd score.  Beloit made it 9-6 in the sixth when Dutton scored on an error and then put together their biggest inning of the season to date in the seventh to end the game early.  Davis had a run-scoring single, Call walked with the bases loaded, as did Martinez.  Mark Stephens singled in a run, Christine drew the third bases-loaded walk of the inning and then Mike Gulve singled in two to end the game.

Luke Brennan got the win, going four-plus innings while giving up four earned runs.  Danny Belling earned a save with 2.2 innings of work, not allowing a run on two hits, striking out two.  Davis had three hits and Gulve and Dutton two each.

In the opener, WLC rallied with one run in the seventh and three in the eighth for the win while the Buccaneers stranded 12 runners.

Beloit scored twice in the opening inning with Martinez and Dutton getting the RBIs.  Gulve doubled in the third run in the second before the Warriors got back within 3-2 on single runs in the third and fourth.

Beloit went up 5-2 with a pair of runs in the fifth on Stephens' RBI single and Gulve's sacrifice fly to center.  But that was the extent of the Buccaneer scoring for the game.  WLC scored an unearned run in the seventh and then grabbed the lead in the eighth with three runs, the lead run scoring on a fielder's choice ground out.  The Bucs left the tying run on third in the eighth and then went quietly in the ninth.

Kam Sallee and Terrence Cribbs both had three hits in the game while Gulve and Stephens each had two hits.

Beloit has the week off before opening Midwest Conference play at St. Norbert College on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.  They then host the Green Knights for two more on Sunday, also at 1:00 p.m.
