Appleton, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team won game one 8-0 over Lawrence University Saturday but dropped the second game 11-3 for a split of their Midwest Conference doubleheader.
The two teams will face off again Sunday at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium to complete the four-game series.
Ryan Kaveney kept up his dazzling mound-work in the opener, giving up just three hits in eight innings, striking out six and walking three. Josh Nelson completed the shutout with a perfect ninth.
The Buccaneers got Kaveney plenty of support, beginning with a three-run third inning. Austin Martinez doubled in the first run; Jeremy Dutton drove in the second run when he reached on an error and Brice Call singled in the third run. Mike Gulve's sacrifice fly to left made it 4-0 in the fourth and Joey Casa's RBI groundout in the seventh.
Beloit closed the scoring with three runs in the eighth. Zach Kolasinski singled in the first run of the inning; Tyler Peacock squeezed in the second run; and Mark Christine reached on an error to plate the final run.
Call had two hits in the game.
In the nightcap, after the Bucs got a run in the top of the inning when Casa scored on a throwing error, the Vikings scored three in the bottom of the inning, added a fourth run in the second and five more in the third to take a 9-1 lead after three. Beloit got one back in the fifth on Casa's RBI single but LU matched it in the bottom of the fifth. Lawrence made it 11-2 in the eighth before Casa singled in Kolasinski in the ninth to close out the scoring.
Gulve, Casa and Christine finished with two hits each.
