Loves Park, IL -- The Beloit College Baseball team, using five pitchers in each game, split a doubleheader at Rockford University Tuesday night at Aviator Stadium, winning game one 9-5 before dropping the nightcap 8-2.
In the game one win Beloit broke away from a 3-3 tie with a five-run seventh to secure the victory.
Rockford scored the first run of the game, unearned, in the third before the Bucs took the lead with three in the fourth. Mark Stephens singled in the first run before Mike Gulve hit a two-run single for the lead. But the Regents tied it up with two in the sixth, the first run crossing on a wild pitch and the second on a double play.
The Buccaneers took the lead for good in the seventh. Jeremy Dutton plated the first run on a sacrifice fly; Joey Casa scored the second on an error; Ryan Kaveney walked with the bases loaded to drive in the third run; and then Mark Christine doubled down the right field line to score the final two runs of the inning. Austin Martinez hit his third home run of the season in the ninth before RC closed the scoring with two in the bottom of the inning.
Steven O'Neill, the fourth Buccaneer pitcher, earned the win with three innings of one-hit pitching. Christine finished with two hits.
Beloit scored their only runs of game two in the fourth, with Baylee Slevira hitting an RBI single and Christine grounding out to drive in the second run. Rockford answered with four runs in the bottom of the inning, only one of the runs earned, and then added four more in the seventh to close out the scoring.
Dutton had three hits in the game.
After four straight non-conference games, Beloit gets back to Midwest Conference play this weekend with a series against Lawrence University. The series begins with two games Saturday at The Ballpark beginning at 1:00 p.m.
