Bucs Step Away From MWC, Sweep Chicago

April 23, 2016

Chicago, IL -- The Beloit College Baseball team had the bye weekend so they played a pair of non-conference games at the University of Chicago Saturday, sweeping the Maroons 2-1 and 8-5 in 10 innings.

In game one Ryan Kaveney scattered nine hits while striking out nine and walking one for his fifth straight win.

Chicago opened the scoring with a run in the fifth, a run which held up in the pitcher's duel until Beloit scored their only runs in the seventh, both unearned.  Zach Kolasinski scored on an error and Kam Sallee doubled in Joey Casa, who had reached base on the error.

Mike Gulve, Sallee and Kolasinski all had two hits in the game.

In game two UC scored one in the first and twice in the second to jump in front.  Beloit tied the game with three runs in the fifth, Brice Call singling in the first run, Kaveney scoring on a wild pitch, and Kolasinski plating the third run with a fielder's choice.  The Buccaneers scored twice more in the seventh to take the lead, with Austin Martinez hitting a sacrifice fly and Gulve an RBI single.  But Chicago scored once in the bottom of the seventh and again with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to tie it and force extra innings.

In the tenth, Call got the lead run in with a bases-loaded walk, Jeremy Dutton singled in the second run, and pinch-runner Will Marcus scored the third run on a wild pitch.  Jamie Huntley got a game-ending double play in the bottom of the tenth for the win and the sweep.

Huntley recorded his second win of the season with three innings of work, giving up three hits while striking out one.  Gulve, Kaveney and Kolasinski each had two hits.

The Buccaneers play a doubleheader vs. Rockford University at Aviator Stadium in Loves Park Tuesday night at 4:00 p.m. before returning to MWC play Saturday when they host Lawrence University in a doubleheader at The Ballpark.
