Bucs Settle for Split with Monmouth

March 26, 2016

Beloit, WI -- The Beloit College Baseball team settled for a split of their non-conference doubleheader at The Ballpark at Strong Stadium Saturday afternoon, winning the opener 5-1 before dropping the nightcap 10-0 in seven innings.

Kam Sallee drove in all five runs in game one, beginning with a sacrifice fly to left in the first to score Mike Gulve.  In the fifth Beloit loaded the bases with two outs before Sallee crushed a grand slam down the left field line.  But after a brief celebration the call was changed to a foul ball.  Two pitches later Sallee hit one definitely fair over the left field fence to make it 5-0.  The Fighting Scots finally got a run on the board in the ninth on a balk to spoil the shutout.

Ryan Kaveney earned his first win of the season, scattering four hits while striking out six and walking one in seven-plus innings.  Jamie Huntley finished the final one-plus innings.  Mike Gulve had three hits while Joey Casa and Jeremy Dutton each had two.

In game two Monmouth plated three runs in the first and added four unearned runs in the second.  The Buccaneers finally got their first hit in the fifth on Austin Martinez's single down the right-field line.  MC scored three more times in the seventh to make it 10-0.  The Bucs got their first base runner to third in the game when Martinez singled up the middle, pinch-runner Will Marcus stole second and advanced to third on a fielder's choice.  But a strikeout ended the contest early.

Beloit had just three hits in the game, with Martinez getting two of them.  Jalen Davis had the other safety, a single in the sixth.

Beloit has little time to think about the split as they travel to Wisconsin Lutheran College on Monday for two games.  First pitch is at 1:00 p.m.
