Unearned Run in 9th has Buccaneers on Wrong End of Tight Regional Battle

March 10, 2016

Auburndale, FL -- The Beloit College Baseball team had their second straight nail-biter of the Spring Trip on Thursday, but this one ended the wrong way.  Fellow-NCAA Division III Central Region foe Coe College scored an unearned run in the ninth inning for a 2-1 win over the Bucs.

Beloit, the home team, struck first in the bottom of the opening inning when Kam Sallee's check-swing dribbler down the first base line scored Joey Casa, who had doubled and advanced to third on a wild pitch.  The Kohawks tied it in the third inning with a two-out triple crossing the plate on a wild pitch after a strikeout.

The teams then battled for the next five innings before Coe got what-proved-to-be the winning run in the ninth.  A lead-off single was sacrificed to second and advanced to third on a fielder's choice, with the hitter reaching on an error.  A one-out sacrifice fly to center plated the lead run.  The Buccaneers went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to end the contest.

The Bucs had just three hits, none after Mike Gulve's leadoff single in the third.  Coe finished with seven hits.

Ryan Kaveney took the tough loss in a complete-game effort, striking out nine and walking one.

Beloit looks to bounce back on Friday in a doubleheader against Gordon College at the Chain of Lakes Park stadium in Winter Haven.  First pitch is at 9:00 a.m. Eastern time.
