Art History News & Information

**Special Projects Update**

In consideration of the large number of requests for Special Projects, we are instituting a new policy for Special Projects.

Beginning May 10, 2014, we require all students requesting special projects in Art History submit an 8- to ten-page proposal and an annotated bibliography of 15 sources to Cheryl Mikulecky (mikuleck@beloit.edu) one week before Special Project Contract Forms are due at the beginning of the semester. (Students are strongly encouraged to consult with and discuss Special Project ideas with the faculty member with whom they wish to work as they begin to conceive their project.) Proposals will be reviewed by the art history faculty. If approved, then and only then will a student be able to sign up for a Special Project in Art History.

Form, procedure, and due dates can be found on the Registrar's website

Alternatives for Art Historians
Don't think a tenure-track job in academia as the only and ideal future job, but realize that the prospect of the number of academic jobs and new Ph.D.'s approaching one another in the near future is extremely unlikely. Therefore, be aware that the skills which you are developing --"doing research; conceptualizing relationships between structure, agency, and culture; combining research and analysis to present arguments with clarity and economy; knowing how to plan and carry out long-term projects" -- are all transferable to a wide range of occupations.
