Joseph C. Rheingold Collection
Through the initial efforts of Mr. and Mrs. James B. Gage, the College was able to acquire in 1958 the significant personal library of Dr. Joseph C. Rheingold, dealing with the era of President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Included in the collection are numerous first editions, such rarities as mint copies of Looking Forward and On Our Way. The collection includes books by and about Roosevelt, and volumes written by numerous members of his cabinets.
Rheingold, a former Rockford, Illinois, psychiatrist, also collected magazine articles that dealt with Roosevelt, and these have been kept as part of the collection.
Arthur R. Gofen, a New York rare book dealer, described the collection as probably the largest and finest personal collection about Roosevelt and the New Deal era in existence. Special items of interest are books written by the President and Eleanor Roosevelt, and the published memoirs of Winston Churchill, Trygve Lie, and generals Eisenhower, Bradley, Marshall, Sitwell, and Montgomery.
