Herb Hodges Mile
Herb Hodges, a 1974 inductee into the Beloit College Athletic Hall of Honor, has had a long and distinguished track and field career. He graduated from Western Illinois University and coached a total of more than 40 years. He was a high school coach for 21 years before coming to Beloit. Eighteen of those years were spent at Wheaton (Ill) High School where he won 41 straight meets and 63 of his last 65 dual meets. His first stay at Beloit was from 1946-1951 and during this time he had four undefeated dual meet seasons, his team won three Midwest Conference titles, and his distance medley team won at the Drake Relays in 1950. He left to spend two years at the University of Alabama where his team won the Southeastern Conference title. He returned to Beloit in 1953 and from 1953-57, sent teams which placed in the Kansas Relays, Drake Relays, Purdue Relays (two-mile relay team won) and the Texas Relays. After leaving Beloit, he coached at Rockford Auburn High School. He had an overall college - high school dual meet record of 194-18 and a Beloit record in dual meets of 20-7.
