New Faculty 2017-18

Jason Alley, Visiting Assistant Professor of Anthropology, earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in anthropology at the University of California, Santa Cruz, and a B.A. in film at the University of California, Berkeley. 

Marina Bergenstock, Visiting Assistant Professor of Theatre, completed an M.F.A. in theatre at the University of Iowa and a B.A. in English at the Pennsylvania State University. 

Joseph Bookman, Assistant Professor of Media Studies, holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in media studies from the University of Iowa, as well as a B.A. in creative writing from Oberlin College.  Joe’s most recent research project examined the ways in which burgeoning flushing infrastructures helped to shape the social and psychic landscape of modernity.

Philip Chen, Assistant Professor of Political Science, earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in political science from the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities and a B.A. in political science from Macalester College.  Phil’s research and teaching interests are centered on issues of American political behavior and public opinion and their relation to political communications.

Ann Frkovich, Visiting Assistant Professor of Education and Youth Studies, completed an Ed.D. in curriculum studies at DePaul University, as well as an M.A. in English education at Columbia University and a B.A. in literature and language at Webster University.

John Hanewall, Visiting Instructor of Psychology, holds an M.S. in guidance and counseling from the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and a B.A. in psychology from Luther College.

Katherine Johnston, Assistant Professor of History, completed her Ph.D. in history at Columbia University after earning an M.A. in history from American University, an M.A. in liberal studies from Dartmouth College, and an A.B. in anthropology from Harvard University.  Her teaching and research interests focus on the history of race, health, and the body in the Atlantic world.

Jill Kambs, Visiting Assistant Professor of Art, earned an M.F.A in book arts and an M.F.A and M.A. in art from the University of Iowa, as well as a B.A. in art and English from Luther College. 

John Kitch, Visiting Assistant Professor of Political Science,completed a Ph.D. in political science at Louisiana State University, an M.A. in international studies at the University of Oklahoma, and a B.A. in political science at Baylor University.

Robert Matera, Visiting Assistant Professor of Classics, is currently completing his Ph.D. in classics at the University of Southern California, where he earned an M.A. in classics.  He also holds a B.A. in classical languages from Carleton College.

Paul McCombs, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Mathematics, earned a Ph.D. in mathematics education at Northern Illinois University, an M.S. in pure mathematics at Kansas State University, and a B.S. in general mathematics at Appalachian State University.

Chelsea McCracken, Visiting Assistant Professor of Media Studies, holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in film studies from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.A. in film studies from Mount Holyoke College.

Ibrahim Moustafa, Visiting Assistant Professor of Chemistry, completed a Ph.D. in chemistry at St. Andrews University, UK, and a B.Sc. in chemistry at Alexandria University in Egypt.

Xiaoyi Sun, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Chinese, earned an M.A. and Ph.D. in linguistics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Bill Warner, Visiting Assistant Professor of History, holds an M.A. and Ph.D. in south Asian history from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, and a B.A. in history from James Madison University.
