A year in the Powerhouse

It couldn’t have opened at a better time.

As we celebrate the first year since the innovative, award-winning Powerhouse opened, we could not have anticipated how important its spaces have been this particular year. A student-centered space like no other, its sheer size and bright, expansive rooms has meant students have safe spaces to study, train, eat, and socialize.

A great space to play, study, or organize a safely-distanced meet-up, the Powerhouse&l... A great space to play, study, or organize a safely-distanced meet-up, the Powerhouse is quickly becoming the heart of campus.

The Stack, an open space on the top floor perfect for dinners and celebrations, has become our student COVID-19 testing site. Freezers are stocked with free leftover meals, conceived to fight food waste and hunger, and are ideal for grabbing a contactless snack. The geothermal heating and cooling system uses circulated river water so air doesn’t recirculate through the building. Yoga classes and impromptu frisbee games are happening frequently in the Fieldhouse.

These are just a few examples of how, in true Beloit spirit, the Powerhouse has been creatively used to help students learn, stay healthy, and enjoy themselves in this unprecedented year.

We appreciate the vision of those who conceived and spearheaded this project, the skills of those who designed it, and the hard work of staff that have made it come to life.

Above all, we thank the generous donors whose gifts took the Powerhouse from an idea to a reality. It is because of your support, for endeavors like the Powerhouse as well as our Be All In campaign, that we know the brightest days for Beloit College are ahead of us.

Thank you.
