Marcail Distante studied abroad in Ecuador, where she volunteered at a local school. As a human rights intern at Global Exchange, she focused on human rights issues in Mexico and Central America. Marcail utilized her Spanish language skills for the benefit of the wider Beloit community, writing articles for a Spanish-language paper in Beloit and interning with the Stateline Literacy Council, where she prepared people for the U.S. citizenship test. She also played lacrosse and soccer.  After graduation, Marcail worked with a labor organization in Oakland, California, helping low income Latinos. She worked as a Housing Opportunities Coach at the Mission Economic Development Agency in San Francisco to empower low to moderate-income Latinos to reach their financial and housing goals.  She is currently the Community Outreach and Program Coordinator at the Binger Center for New Americans, which is part of the University of Minnesota’s law school.  Marcail organizes legal clinics, expands community access to legal services, and builds partnerships with local organizations.  She is also active in the community; she teaches a citizenship course as well as a Spanish class for local senior citizens.
