BELOIT COLLEGE PRESIDENT TO ATTEND STATE DEPARTMENT HIGHER EDUCATION SUMMIT

Beloit College President John Burris is one of a select group of American college presidents invited to attend the United States Higher Education Summit for Global Development in Washington, D.C., April 29-30. The summit is hosted by Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and Secretary of Education Margaret Spellings.

This is the second such summit meeting hosted by the Departments of State and Education. It will extend the vision of the 2006 University President’s Higher Education Summit. The goal of this year’s meeting is to expand the role and impact of U.S. and foreign higher education institutions in world-wide social and economic development.

The summit will broaden partnerships and networks among higher education institutions in this country and in other developed and developing countries and with the private sector and foundations. The meeting will highlight and expand emerging and innovative approaches to teaching, research, technology transfer and business development. Participants will work to develop strategies to establish new and enduring higher education relationships for international development, particularly in science and technology, engineering and other fields that support innovation and economic growth.

“I am looking forward to meeting with the secretaries and other education leaders to share our experiences and our commitment to international education,” Burris said. “This invitation is recognition of Beloit College’s strong reputation in international programs and our strength in science.”

Almost half of Beloit College students spend part of their time studying abroad and the student body includes representatives from more than 40 nations.
