Lyrical verse from many countries and religious traditions will be the centerpiece of a poetry reading on Saturday, April 19, at 7:30 p.m., in the Java Joint, in Pearsons Hall, on the Beloit College campus. Like most events at the college, the reading is free and open to the public.
“Poets of the Spirit: East & West” will highlight poetic works that eloquently celebrate humanity’s connection to something other than the self. Featured poems will represent a range of religious and cultural traditions by illustrating the beauty in time-honored Christian, Hindu and Sufi works. Among the artists whose works will be read is Rumi, a 13th century Persian poet whose poetry remains popular in some contemporary circles.
Pastor James Roberts of the Emmanuel Lutheran Church in Rockford, Ill. will serve as the reader for this event, which promises to unite seemingly disparate views on spirituality through a shared love of literature. Music may also accompany some of the readings.
The program is sponsored by the Spiritual Life Program at Beloit College. For details about “Poets of the Spirit: East & West,” contact event coordinator Kevin Symanietz at symaniet@stu.beloit.edu. Information about this and other events at Beloit College can be found online at www.beloit.edu.
