Assistant Professor of Music Oleg Proskurnya will conduct a concert of the Beloit College Orchestra on Sunday, April 20, at 4 p.m., in Eaton Chapel, on the Beloit College campus. Although the event is free and open to the public, contributions will be accepted at the door.
The Beloit College Orchestra is composed of string, wind, and percussion instrumentalists and offers performances both on and off campus.
The first half of the April 20 concert will feature the orchestra and the Beloit College Jazz Ensemble performing Gershwin's “Rhapsody in Blue,” with solo piano accompaniment by Professor of Music Renato Premezzi. Written in 1924, the piece combines elements of classical and jazz music. “Rhapsody in Blue” was first performed in the concert titled An Experiment in Modern Music, which was held in New York City. At the time, Gershwin's solo piano performance was entirely improvisational. The piano score was written only after the show.
After an intermission, the Beloit College Orchestra will perform Beethoven's “Symphony No. 7.” Beethoven first conducted the piece in 1813 at a benefit for Austrian and Bavarian soldiers wounded during the Napoleonic Wars. It was dedicated to Count Moritz von Fries and Russian Empress Elisabeth Aleksiev.
