In the spirit of social justice, two spoken-word artists will offer a performance about conflict between Israelis and Palestinians. Kevin Coval, an Israeli-American, and Ismail Khalidi, a Palestinian-American, will perform Two Peoples, Three Opinions on Thursday, April 17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Java Joint, in Pearsons Hall, on the Beloit College campus. Before the performance, the two artists will lead a workshop about spoken-word performing. Both events are free and open to the public.
The Two Peoples, Three Opinions event will be modeled after other spoken-word performances, which typically feature one person or a group of people reciting a poem or story aloud. Kevin Coval is a poet, activist, hip-hop artist and educator. Writer and playwright Ismail Khalidi recently contributed to the book Letters from Young Activists: Today's Rebels Speak Out (2005). The two men will bring their independent artistry together for this collaboration.
“This is going to be a great social justice event addressing issues of cooperation, community, peace and how we build peace through artistic expression,” says sophomore Sarah Barasch ( St. Louis, Mo.), who is coordinating the event. She believes that the performance may promote dialogue about difficult issues. “Performances such as these are accessible ways to begin such conversation,” she says.
The performance and workshop are being arranged by the Beloit College chapter of Am Yisrael/Hillel, with support from the English department and the Intercultural Center, as well as the Black Students United and Beloit Peace and Justice clubs. Am Yisrael/Hillel is a Jewish collegiate organization that helps to foster Jewish identity on college and university campuses.
