Thursday, April 17 ***** This event is free and open to the public. |
Linda Zerilli, a professor of political science at Northwestern University, will present the 2007-8 Harry Davis lecture at Beloit College on Thursday, April 17, at 4 p.m., in Richardson Auditorium, in Morse-Ingersoll Hall, on the college campus. The lecture is free and open to the public.
Her address is titled "Towards a Feminist Theory of Judgment" and it will focus on Zerilli’s two areas of expertise—political theory and feminist theory. The lecture considers the idea that some practices are harmful to women in general, even within the context of culturally accepted norms. Zerilli has developed a conception of judgment that is not based on Western cultural values. In her presentation, she will identify ways in which judgments can be made about such issues without a Western bias.
The author of two books on feminism, Signifying Woman: Culture and Chaos in Rousseau, Burke, and Mill (1994) and Feminism and the Abyss of Freedom (2005), Zerilli is currently writing a book called Toward a Democratic Theory of Judgment. She has published numerous articles on the perception of women in politics and the relationship between gender and political theory.
Zerilli received her doctorate from the University of California-Berkeley. From 1998 to 1999, she served as a Fulbright fellow in Germany. In 1998, she joined the Gender Studies Program at Northwestern University.
The Harry Davis lecture is an endowed lectureship that honors Harry R. Davis, who served as a professor of government at Beloit College from 1948 to 1990. The annual event focuses on the philosophy and practice of political science by bringing guest speakers to the Beloit College campus.
