RESEARCH IN PROGRESS

Major projects:

“Changing Gender and Leadership of Public Organizations.” Using some of the earliest work on gendered organizations as a baseline (Duerst-Lahti 1987), I revisit state bureaucratic organizations 20 years later to investigate the extent to which changes in the gendering of public organizations have made public sources of power more accessible to women, and their public leadership more normal. I also will explore these changes for men and masculinity. Questions of public and political leadership lie at the heart of this study. 62 two-hour structured interviews completed; data analysis underway.

Gender, especially masculinity, in presidential elections. Ongoing data collection and analysis of news accounts related to 2004 presidential election. Based upon over 10,000 articles from seven newspapers, beginning in January 2001; uses content analysis to explore and interpret gender in presidential elections. For book chapters and articles, perhaps will develop book project. One chapter completed; two in progress. Data collection moving into the 2008 election.

Member, Campus Leadership Team, $100 million Comprehensive Campaign, with focus on development through academic departments, 2005-6.

As member of elected Program and Professional Development Committee, spearheading effort to increase faculty professional development funds, 2002-4.

Team Leader, committee to secure American Association of Colleges and Universities grant for Democracy and Global Citizenship. Successful.

Member, committee to secure $3.2 million grant for a Luce Foundation Professorship in Global Environmental Change and Policy, and its related campus program, 2000-1. Unsuccessful.

As associate dean, 1993-1997, worked with development offices on the $100 million comprehensive campaign.

Participated in priority setting; created strategic approach to cumulative funding drive in academic affairs; collected and dispersed information for individual faculty research.
