What happens during Rush?
During the Rush week, you will not be obligated to the fraternity in any way. Attending Rush events is not mandatory although we do recommend that you attend at least two so you can meet the brothers and learn more about the fraternity.
What happens after Rush Week? When Do I Pledge?
At the end of the Rush Week there will be a short Pledging Ceremony. This is where you official express your interest to join the fraternity and are declared a pledge of Phi Kappa Psi. This is a totally optional ceremony and it is NOT MANDATORY to pledge if you attend rush events. You should only pledge Phi Kappa Psi if you are genuinely interested in learning more about us.
The pledging ceremony is also one of the only non-secret ceremonies in Phi Psi that you may invite close friends or family to attend. We encourage all prospective pledges to call their relatives to attend this ceremony.
What do I have to do as a pledge?
Pledges are required to pay their pledging fee of fifty dollars. Pledges who wish to join the fraternity are required to complete the pledge process which entails attending weekly meetings (2 hours a week) for six weeks. (See the next question)
What are the requirements of being a pledge?
After pledging you have only ONE MANDATORY REQUIREMENT, i.e. paying your Pledging Fee of fifty (50) dollars. You will not be asked to do anything else after pledging if you do not wish to join Phi Kappa Psi.
If you want to join the fraternity, there is ONLY ONE OTHER REQUIREMENT which is that you attend the weekly pledge education meetings. Phi Kappa Psi has a six week pledge education period during which pledge are taught about Phi Kappa Psi, its history, traditions and other material relating to being a member. We require prospective members to attend all pledge meetings (exceptions can be made depending on circumstances).
At no time during the pledge process will you be required to do anything other than the above requirements. Phi Kappa Psi National is strongly against Hazing and no chapter is allowed to haze pledges. Wisconsin Gamma is in full compliance with this rule.
You may also choose to de-pledge at any time during the process. Again, the only requirement after you de-pledge is that you pay the pledging fee of fifty dollars.
Does Phi Kappa Psi - Wisconsin Gamma haze pledges?
Wisconsin Gamma DOES NOT HAZE PLEDGES. All the brothers personally abhor hazing of any sort and at no time during the pledging or initiation process will you be hazed. Wisconsin Gamma strongly believes that hazing negatively influences the fraternity and forwards ideas that are against those of Phi Kappa Psi.
The Beloit College IFPC defines hazing as:
"Article VII Sec. 5 - Hazing shall not be permitted. Hazing shall be defined as any action which causes mental, physical, or emotional harm to any individual. The IFPC will be responsible for insuring that no hazing occurs"
Wisconsin Gamma's bylaws read:
"Hazing
Hazing of and/or by members and pledges as defined in the policies of the Beloit College IFPC, Beloit College residential life office, and FIPG insurance, and anything as determined by the chapter as outlined in appendix B will not be permitted."
A brother WILL NEVER order or pressure you to do anything! Your membership will only depend on you paying the pledging fee and attending pledge meetings. You will NEVER BE REQUIRED to do anything against your will.
Despite our efforts, if a pledge feels uncomfortable at any time during the pledging and/or initiation process, the brothers will immediately put a halt to any proceedings and try to resolve the situation. Again, Phi Kappa Psi - Wisconsin Gamma DOES NOT HAZE PLEDGES.
Does pledging ensure membership?
No. At the end of the pledge process, a vote is conducted among the brothers to see if all pledges are worthy of initiation. If a pledge is found unsuitable, he will not be allowed to join the fraternity. Alternatively, the brothers may also choose to defer a pledge's membership until the next initiation if they feel he needs to get more acquainted with the fraternity before joining.
When do I initiate? What is initiation?
Initiation is the ceremony where you will be installed as a brother. It is conducted on a night mutually suitable for the brothers and the pledges. The initiation ceremony is a secret ceremony and nobody except brothers, Phi Kappa Psi alumni and pledges found suitable for initiation will be allowed to attend the proceedings.
A pledge may choose not to initiate AT ANY TIME DURING THE CEREMONY. If a pledge chooses to do so, he will be escorted away from the proceedings immediately and will face absolutely no consequences what so ever.

To sum it up:
We at Wisconsin Gamma believe that Rush Week and Pledging are beneficial experiences for any student interested in Greek Life. An individual should learn as much as he can about a fraternity before committing to membership. Phi Kappa Psi has a six-week pledge education period which teaches pledges what it means to be a brother. We do not believe in or condone of hazing of any sort.
