ONE-ON-ONE ASSISTANCE
At Beloit College we have two full-time professional staff, the Director and the Assistant Director, who can meet with your son/daughter individually. In individual sessions we can get to know your son/daughter, his/her preferences, strengths, weaknesses, and help him/her create a plan or strategy that will work. We can address a variety of concerns such as managing time, reading faster with improved comprehension, handling test anxiety, taking notes or increasing motivation to study. We don't promise magical transformations, but we will do our best to assist in improving your students performance. If we do not have the expertise to address your student's concern(s), we will help the student find where he/she will be best served at Beloit College.
FREE TUTORING PROGRAM AT BELOIT COLLEGE
One avenue of getting additional assistance in a particular course is to work with a tutor. Tutoring is FREE to all students currently enrolled at Beloit College. The LSSC hires and trains students who have been recommended by professors to provide tutoring assistance. Typically this tutoring is provided one-on-one, though occasionally it is done in small groups. Sometimes students are also interested in getting a group together to study for a particular course - that can also be coordinated through the LSSC.
The process is simple; if the student wants a tutor, s/he needs to come to the LSSC and complete a short request form. Then in a week or so, the LSSC emails the student the name and contact information of the assigned tutor (and we give the contact information to the tutor who also tries to contact the student at the same time). The tutor and student then get together and meet (up to 3 hours per week) regularly to improve your student's knowledge of the subject. If time permits and the situation warrants it, the tutor may also work with the student on general study skills and strategies.
Tutoring services are available for most courses, but are not guaranteed. Fortunately, the professors of Beloit College are willing to assist students and many times also have Teaching Assistants (TAs), students whom have done well in the course in the past and provide study sessions and classroom assistance to the students. As you can see, there are many avenues for reaching academic goals available at Beloit College.
Would you like your student to get a job to help fund their education?
For students who are particularly knowledgeable in a course or talented in a particular subject area, we have paid tutoring positions available. We typically hire over 50 tutors per semester. Students can work to a maximum of 10 hours per week at $6.70 per hour (2007) and may be, but do not need to be, work-study students. The hours are flexible and the tutors provide an invaluable resource on campus. For other possible positions on campus, students can contact the Financial Aid Office.
WORKSHOPS
The Learning Support Services Center provides a variety of workshops or group sessions. The workshop sessions are held throughout the year and cover a variety of topics. At times, topics are presented for particular groups such as First Year Initiatives (FYI) classes, athletes, fraternities, residence hall floors, and clubs or organizations.

In general, as a student prepares to enter college, it is a good time for the student to learn how to seek out and acquire the services that s/he needs for him/herself.
