Bausch’s work has appeared in The New Yorker, The Atlantic Monthly, Esquire, Playboy, GQ, Harper's Magazine, and other periodicals. It has also been featured in numerous "best-of" collections, including the O. Henry Awards' Best American Short Stories and New Stories from the South.

He has received several awards, including a National Endowment for the Arts fellowship, a Guggenheim fellowship, the Lila Wallace-Reader’s Digest Writers Award, the PEN/Malamud Award for Excellence in the Short Story, and the Academy Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters.

Bausch is dedicated to teaching the next generation of writers. He holds the Lillian and Morrie A. Moss Chair of Excellence at The University of Memphis, and was formerly Professor of English and the Heritage Chair of Creative Writing at George Mason University. “I love teaching,” he said in a 2003 interview with The Washington Post. “If I made a trillion dollars, I would still teach. It's different every day. You get to meet intelligent people all the time — or at least most of the time.”
