Science at Beloit

Any way you measure it, Beloit College has been providing distinguished education in the sciences for many years. We have a talented science faculty committed to both teaching and research. In fact, our science faculty has pioneered innovations in teaching that involves hands-on and collaborative learning in the classroom, laboratory and field. These faculty (often working with students) are active in publishing, receiving research grants, speaking at conferences, accepting awards, and even launching start-up companies.

  • Beloit College's science majors go on to earn graduate degrees in record numbers.
  • Beloit is among the top 10 percent of private colleges producing graduates who earn Ph.D.'s in mathematics, chemistry, and life sciences
  • Beloit ranks 11 among 519 private baccalaureate colleges in the nation in producing graduates who earn earth science Ph.D.'s
  • Alumni scientists hold prominent positions in the scientific and medical community
  • Many non-science majors pursue careers in which science plays a central role

While our science faculty members focus on their majors, they also seek to inspire non-science majors to a high degree of scientific understanding. Such breadth is, after all, the hallmark of an excellent liberal arts college.

Beloit College is a national leader in reinventing science education. A big part of that reinvention involves enabling enabling an experience-based approach, "learning science by doing science as scientists do it." Beloit faculty have been leaders in the following initiatives:

  • BioQUEST, an international consortium of biology curriculum developers based at Beloit
  • ChemLinks, a Beloit-based consortium of leading liberal arts colleges to develop course materials that support scientific literacy in chemistry
  • Keck Consortium of leading liberal arts colleges in the field of geology, providing opportunities for collaborative student-faculty research
