How I found Beloit
I read about Beloit in The 100 Best Colleges for African American Students, and later attended a Colleges That Change Lives program in Sacramento. I just “clicked” with the director of admissions.
The challenges
I wanted a small college atmosphere, but didn’t realize that it would take some adjusting to a small college atmosphere….I’m from the San Francisco. There’s no mall here!
The rewards
Becoming a student leader with BSU has helped shape my perspective. I’ve discovered how cool philosophy can be. I learn things here every day that blow my mind. I’ve learned how to drink chai and talk about life for hours.
Unexpected discovery
Dance! It’s become a form of meditation for me.
Favorite course
There are two: Script Analysis, with Rod Umlas and Comparative Religious Ethics with Natalie Gummer.
Favorite Pastime
Going sledding at 2 am; singing the blues with my friend who plays the guitar. It’s easy to be spontaneous here.
Favorite extracurricular activity
Black Students United, Dance, Theatre, and my job at the Multicultural Center.
What prospective students won’t learn in the catalog
How much you will grow at Beloit; how much Beloit will change your life and perspective.
Advice to prospective students
Come with an open mind.
Favorite place in Beloit, the town
Bagels ‘N More for the best omelet ever; a great hair supply store run by an Asian woman, just like in California; Halah, a Muslim diner with great food. |
