Web Sites with Online Classroom Activities

• Learning from the Fossil Record, University of California, Berkeley
• National Geographic Society. The National Geographic Society's Geography Education Program works with educators all over the country to produce lessons, units, and activities designed to bring good geography into the classroom.
• U.S. Geological Survey. "The Learning Web:" a portion of the USGS web dedicated to K-12 education, exploration, and life-long learning.

Interactive Learning Sites

• GLOBE (Global Learning and Observations to Benefit the Environment). GLOBE students make a core set of environmental observations at or near their schools and report their data via the Internet. Scientists use GLOBE data in their research and provide feedback to the students to enrich their science education. Each day, images created from the GLOBE student data sets are posted on the World Wide Web, allowing students and visitors to the GLOBE web site to visualize the student environmental observations.
• Science Learning Network Directed at K-8 teachers and students. Each exercise includes teacher's guides.

American Geological Institute (AGI)

AGI is one of the major professional organizations promoting earth science and earth science education. AGI works with the National Science Foundation to update and improve earth science curricula. AGI publishes Earth Science Connection, a forum for scientists and educators to exchange ideas and information, covering effective programs in geoscience and opportunities for professional interaction. In addition, AGI distributes other educational materials and pamphlets on careers in the geosciences, and publishes several journals and magazines (see descriptions below).

GSA is the largest national organization of professional geologists. Their project Partners for Excellence is making the expertise of their members available to secondary teachers (see Earth Science Alliance description). Opportunities also exist for teachers to attend regional and national GSA meetings and participate in field trips and short courses. Additional educational programs are currently being developed. GSA also publishes pamphlets on employment opportunities in the geosciences.

Over 63,000 members. Four separate journals cater to teachers at all levels (Science and Children, Science Scope, The Science Teacher, and the Journal of College Science Teaching).
